Jesuit missionary to the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico; wrote his dictionary while in Brunn (present day Brno, Czechoslovakia) 20 years after the Jesuits were expelled.
The one volume contains both a German-Tarahumara dictionary, and a Tarahumara-German dictionary. Steffel annotated some of the entries. The end section contains general phrases that he says are derived in format from those of Herr Bacmeister, St. Petersburg, 1773; but that he has altered to consist of Latin, German, and Tarahumaran equivalents.

Steffel's 1791 dictionary was published as part of an 1809 series on reports of different lands of New Spain: Nachrichten von verschiedenen Ländern des Spanischen Amerika, by Christoph Gottlieb von Murr.
