This collection is organized into two subgroups: Papers and Photographs. The Papers in the first subgroup include biographical information, correspondence, and drafts of 26 of his manuscripts, including Bloody Trails of the Old Southwest and Adventures in Navajoland. The photographs are the second subgroup in this collection, this uncludes, black-and-white photographs which cover the years 1902-1929. The bulk of them are mounted and deal with Forrest's travels in the West, especially his visits among the Indians of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. The mounted photographs are chronicled by numbers on the reverse side which correspond to the numbers in two indexes prepared by Forrest for easy identification.

Scope and Content Note
This collection is organized into two subgroups: Papers and Photographs.
The Papers in the first subgroup include biographical information; a photocopy of Earle R. Forrest's diary from June 24, 1902 - September 27, l926, covering the same times that he was taking photographs and traveling in the West; correspondence, chiefly regarding Forrest's publications; drafts of 26 of his manuscripts, including Bloody Trails of the Old Southwest and Adventures in Navajoland; newspaper articles written for the Coconino Sun (Flagstaff) in 1943; and a journal article which appeared in The Journal of Arizona History in 1965. Most of Forrest's manuscripts in this collection pertain to Arizona and the Southwest, and many of the photographs that he took while in this area illustrated his publications.
The black-and-white photographs in the second subgroup cover the years 1902-1929.
Other photographs outside the range of the numbers in the indexes, unmounted photographs, and other unidentified photographs have been divided into subject areas.
The group of 160 oversize items represents primarily Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. Again, these items have been grouped into subject areas. Also included in this subgroup are 17 glass
plate negatives of Arizona birds and 18 miscellaneous negatives, primarily of Indians, as identified by Earle R. Forrest on their negative sleeves. Many of the oversize photographs were used in Earle R. Forrest's book, With a Camera in Old Navajoland.
Although the indexes also detail pictures taken in the Pennsylvania area, those photographs are not part of this collection. There is little documentation in this collection of Forrest's career as a civil engineer or newspaper reporter. Additional segments of the Earle R. Forrest Collection are housed in two places: the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh.
The Museum of Northern Arizona has 36 photograph record books, 15 diaries and diary-like books, and 14 field notebooks of photographs which are a part of Earle R. Forrest's collection. It also has 8,190 additional glass plates and negatives.
It is the responsibility of the user to obtain permission to publish

Contains anthropology and archaeology awards; biographical information from the Pony Express Courier (1936, 1937); the clipping of the distribution of the Forrest papers from the Washington, Pennsylvania Observer Reporter, and other miscellaneous personal effects.
Contains photocopied segments, probably from the diaries at the Museum of Northern Arizona, of Earle R. Forrest's diary covering the times he was in Arizona and the Southwest. The entries form 1902-1909 briefly describe Forrest's trips to a Colorado cow camp, the Southern Ute Reservation, Meadows' Trading Post in New Mexico, the Tucson area, Walnut Canyon, White Mesa (now Wupatki National Monument), the Petrified Forest, the CO Bar Ranch, Cuba, Mexico, Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, and the Snake, Antelope, Corn, and Flute Dances at Oraibi and Mishongnovi on the Hopi Reservation. The entries from 1923-1926 cover Forrest's travels in the East as well as in the western states of New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The notebook contains his personal notes, "Birds of Arizona" and "A List of Relics and Curios Collected in Arizona." Some of the bird notes refer to the birds Forrest observed near Bayless Ranch in Oracle, Arizona, of which there are mounted prints in the "Photographs" series (#641-655, Box 6, Folder 8) and glass plate negatives in the "Negatives" series (Box 17, Folder 7).
The majority of the correspondence is with Forrest's publishers and details business arrangements with regard to his publications. Also includes, in miscellaneous correspondence, one letter from F.W. Hodge of The Southwest Museum regarding the use of Forrest's photographs for illustrating the Quivera Society Publications. Other correspondence is found in the series, "Manuscripts and Articles" and in the series "Supplemental Papers."
Contains 26 original typed and handwritten published and unpublished manuscripts by Earle R. Forrest. Some of the manuscripts are accompanied by material relating to the production of the book, including contracts, reviews, and promotions. The manuscript, "Arizona's Dark and Bloody Ground," is related to Forrest's book by that same title; however, the actual manuscript of the book is contained in "Bloody Trails of the Old Southwest," which is an account of the Graham-Tewksbury feud in Pleasant Valley, Arizona, in the late 1880s. The manuscript, "California Joe," tells the story of Moses Milner, also known as California Joe, a noted army scout and Indian fighter in the West. Also included is correspondence to Earle R. Forrest from Joe E. Milner, the grandson of California Joe, with whom Forrest collaborated to write the book. The manuscript, "Missions and Pueblos of the Old Southwest," describes the myths, legends, and fiestas of the Spanish missions and Indian pueblos in Arizona and New Mexico. All of the "Snake Dance" manuscripts are similar in content and discuss the ritual dance for rain held in the Hopi villages during the early 1900s.
The manuscripts "Adventures in Navajo Land" and "With a Camera in Old Navajo Land" detail Forrest's wanderings among the Southern Utes and the Navajos in the early 1900s. "The Old Man's Journey" and "The Old Man's Last Ride," both variations of the same theme, tell of an old cowboy who receives a letter from his dying mother whom he has not seen in thirty years. "Spanish Gold" and its sequel, "Ghost Ranch," weave a mystery of gold seekers, cattle rustlers, and twin brothers at the Lee Ranch in the San Francisco Peaks. The manuscript, "Some Little-Known Battlefields," deals with battles fought in various parts of the United States from the Pittsburgh area west to Montana between 1749 and 1877. Additional information pertaining to Billy the Kid can be found in a pamphlet in the series "Supplemental Papers" (Box 4, Folder 10), and in an oversize photograph in the series "Photographs" (Box 17, Folder 6). For a list of Earle R. Forrest's books found in Special Collections, see Appendix on p. 19.

Contains 1320 photographs, most of which were taken by Earle R. Forrest. Contains 602 mounted and numbered photographs, #431-1371, which measure 5 1/4" X 7 1/2", including the mount. Most of these photographs document the Hopi Indians, the Navajo Indians, the New Mexico Pueblo Indians, and the Southern Utes during the first quarter of the twentieth century. There are 558 unnumbered and/or unidentified photographs which measure 5 1/4" X 7 1/2" or less. Categorized by subject area, these photographs detail scenes from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Washington, D.C. as well as from Africa, Cuba, and Mexico. Some of these photographs duplicate those found in the mounted photographs. The 160 oversize photographs, which measure 11" X 14" or less, include primarily Indians of Arizona and New Mexico, many of which were used in Forrest's book, With a Camera in Old Navajoland. Photographs of Indian dwellings and ruins, missions, and a photograph of a picture of Billy the Kid are also found here.
