William Ernest Henley (1849-1903) was a poet and editor of the weekly journal London, of Magazine of Art, (1882-1886), National Observer (1889-1891), and the New Review (1894-1898). He was the author of various volumes of verse, including Book of Verses (1888), For England's Sake (1900), and Hawthorne and Lavender (1901). His best known poem is Invictus. Henley collaborated with Robert Louis Stevenson on four plays: Deacon Brodie, Beau Austin, Admiral Guinea, and Macaire. Henley also collaborated with John S. Farmer in compiling A Dictionary of Slang and its Analogues.
