George Lippitt Andrews was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1828. He entered the Rhode Island Militia in 1844, was promoted to Major in 1848, and to Colonel in 1853. He resigned from the military in 1856. In 1859 he rejoined the military as a Second Lieutenant in the Missouri National Guard. Andrews served in the Civil War and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1862 and then to Colonel in 1863. After the Civil War Andrews organized and recruited the 17th and 13th United States Infantry, 1863 to 1866. In 1871 Andrews commanded the 25th United States Infantry. Andrews served in the Indian country west of the Mississippi for twenty-five years and was Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Arizona from 1869 to 1871. He retired from the military on April 22, 1892, and was advanced to the rank of Brigadier General on the retired list by act of Congress on April 23, 1904. Andrews died in Washington, D.C. on July 19, 1920 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The collection contains newspaper clippings, Andrews' signature clipped from letters, and photographs. Andrews' diary (1870) makes up the bulk of the collection.

Also included are a brief obituary of Andrews; photographs of an unidentified boy and woman, possibly Andrews' wife Alice Beverly Potter Andrews (1826-1878) and son George Andrews (1850-1928), c. 19th century; and a 1918 photograph of Andrews with an unidentified man, possibly his son George. | |||||||||||
