Biographical Note

Charles H. Herner is a native of Arizona who received two degrees in US History from The University of Arizona. He taught history at Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson from 1963 until his retirement in 1990, and reached the rank of colonel before his retirement from the United States Army Reserve. This collection of research files helped to serve as the basis for his two published books, The Arizona Rough Riders (1970) and Alexander O. Brodie: Frontiersman, Rough Rider, Governor (2012).

Scope and Content Note

Papers 1834-2011: This collection contains research files covering the life and histories surrounding Alexander O. Brodie and the Rough Riders of Arizona. 'Rough Riders' was the name given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, a response to the understaffing of the United States Army as a result of the American Civil War and it was only one of three volunteer regiments to see action. The majority of files are made up of photocopied newspaper articles and headlines, military muster rolls, and correspondence with institutions regarding research materials gathered. Additionally, some personal papers, correspondence and photographs are included as well as microfilms and slides. Each series is arranged alphabetically by folder title.
