Historical Note

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, or Phi Kappa Phi (ΦΚΦ), is one of the oldest honors societies, being establishedin 1897. The name, Phi Kappa Phi,came from the Greek words, Philosophìa Ktateìto Photôn, meaning “Let the love of learning rule humanity.” This honor society had established a different kind of organization, where the emphasis was put on excellence in various academic disciplines. Its aim was not to undermine the earlier honor societies of the late 1800s, but to further promote the value of education. In respect to this, the early leadership in the society had consideration towards establishing a sense of high rank made up of many different classes and groups. In addition, its members and chapters range from the United States to other countries as well.

Over the years, Phi Kappa Phi has given the academic opportunity to attend Universities and colleges to many students for scholastic merit. These awards include scholarships, study abroad grants, and artistic awards. Currently, the Honors Society gives $1 million in grants and awards each biennium. The University of Arizona chapter was founded on May 31, 1916, being the 15th chapter.
