 Abstract:  This collection includes covers, postcards and letters mailed from towns in New Mexico during the state’s territorial period. Items of interest include real photo postcards which show images of: the Alvarado in Albuquerque (postmarked Anapra 1908); the Catholic Church in Las Cruces (postmarked Acme 1909); the Overland Limited Train (postmarked Black Tower 1910); Deming, NM (postmarked Carne 1912); a cattle ranch near Portales (postmarked Carter, 1907); a birdseye view of Folsom (postmarked Cuates, 1911); the Institute for the Blind, Alamogordo (postmarked Carrizozo); the hospital at Dawson, 1909; Main Street, Tucumcari, (postmarked Dodson 1911); Mexican Revolution politician Federico Gonzalez Garza (postmarked Elephant Butte 1911); Main Street, Melrose (postmarked House 1910); Tucumcari High School (postmarked Hanley 1911); the wholesale district, El Paso, (postmarked Lanark 1908); unknown building in Lamy, 1906; Main Street Las Cruces, 1908; the Church at Isleta Pueblo (postmarked Leopold 1906); St. Anthony’s Sanitarium at Las Vegas, 1910 (Postmarked Levy and Porvenir 1910); Lodge at Cloudcroft, (postmarked Mountain Park); Bravo Ranch Quarters (postmarked Nara Visa 1908); Chaves Courthouse in Roswell (postmarked Orchard Park 1911) Pipeline from Mountains (postmarked Orogrande 1907); Alameda Park Depot and Office Bldg, Alamogordo (postmarked Oscuro 1908); President Porfirio Diaz in a parade at El Paso (postmarked Pearl 1909); Souvenir of Silver Springs, (postmarked Silver Springs 1911); View of Sylanite (postmarked Sylvanite 1909); Street Scene, Silver City (postmarked Tyrone, 1910). A number of picture cachets are also in the collection, including: a cachet of St. Michaels College (postmarked Santa Fe 1889); a cachet with a map of Colorado and New Mexico (postmarked Lookout 1880); and a cachet for “A. Gusdorf Grain Mill (postmarked Ranches of Taos, 1888). Letters in the collection include: a letter from a teacher describing Christmas celebrations and social events in 1907 in Alma; letters about the economy (lumber, farming, mining), horses and people and a postcard, from Copperton, 1905; a letter from a German speaking soldier at, Fort Stanton, 1886; a letter about Statehood Day and taxes (postmarked Lakewood, 1912); a letter about house construction in Madison; a letter saying “thanks for the tobacco” and about organizing a Breeder’s Association in Mesilla, 1906; a letter with details of raising and selling hogs, Ruidoso, 1911; a letter about bad condition of the church and school, Silver City, 1909; and a letter which is described as the writers “last correspondence from the New Mexico Territory”. Other interesting items include: a cover from Gascom dated 1900, signed by the postmaster on the closing date of the post office; a handwritten postmark, dated 1878, Loma Parda; a handwritten postmark and letter from Turquesa 1881; a postmark from the KC and La Jolla RPO (postmarked Melrose, 1908); covers from 1874 and 1875, Santa Fe.

 Abstract:  This collection contains philatelic material collected and created by Quintus Fernando between 1969 and 1999. Quintus Fernando, originally from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), was a stamp collector that specialized in Mexican Stamps. His other areas of interest were stamps from Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ceylon and Australia. He had many award winning stamp exhibitions that included original research. The papers consist of photos, award certificates, catalogs, and collected articles. Exhibition documents, original manuscripts and research are included.

 Abstract:  The APS Childs-Irving hydroelectric power plant was located between Strawberry and Camp Verde, Arizona, and was constructed in 1908 at the base of the Mogollon Rim, harnessing water from Fossil Spring. It supplied power to Yavapai County and even Phoenix during the 1920’s. The collection is organized into administrative records (including stockholder, construction, photographs and operations), historical materials, miscellaneous records, and a photo album. Two oversized drawers contain maps, sketches, historical drawings, and notes. One is processed (see container list) and the other is not.

 Abstract:  Alta Vista Garden Club was organized and became a Federated Garden Club starting in 1951. The Club was initially started in order to stimulate interest in and knowledge of the different forms of gardening, to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and wildlife and to promote general civic improvements in the City of Prescott. These records consists of organization history, copies of news clippings regarding the Alta Vista Garden Club, a club docent’s project notebook, local garden center flyers or handouts and scrapbooks of the Club from 1963-1971 and 1980-1981.

 Title:  Arizona American Revolutionary Bicentennial Commission Records, SHM MS-40 1970-1975 ead

 Abstract:  This collection consists of planning, reports, and correspondence related to the events and activities of the American Bicentennial Celebration. It particularly focuses on events in Arizona. Many materials are also included from the American Revolutionary Bicentennial Commission. Bicentennial events were coordinated by a Bicentennial Commission. A Prescott Bicentennial Committee was formed from Prescott people. The local committee identified projects, approved them, and sent them to the state and requested funds. Some of the most significant projects that were done were the moving of the Bashford House and the formation of the Yavapai Heritage Foundation for surveying historic properties. Cleaning up the Granite Creek was another notable project. These projects were administered by the state commission.

 Abstract:  Albert Franklin Banta was an Arizona pioneer who served as an Indian Scout, mail carrier, postmaster, miner and newspaperman. He served on the Territorial Legislature under the name “Charles Franklin” and played a critical role in the creation of Apache County. He founded the Arizona Miner newspaper in Prescott and established the St. John’s Observer in St. John’s Arizona. The collection contains records for his various roles as well as financial and personal papers. There is a rich collection of correspondence regarding many historical facts in Arizona’s history.

 Abstract:  Albert William (Bill) Bork was a second-generation native of Prescott, born in August 1906, in the Arizona Territory. After receiving his Doctor in Letters, he accepted a position in Mexico City where he later served as the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Mexico City College. This collection consists of personal records of the Bork family as well as materials from Mr. Bork’s involvement with the Smoki People in Prescott. He was also an avid philatelic collector and his collection is included. Photographs of the Bork family and Smoki People are also included in the collection.

 Abstract:  A retired, United Methodist pastor, Stanley C. Brown and his wife, Ruth, lived in several areas in Arizona. This collection is an accumulation of his work as a researcher, author, historian, teacher, and lecturer. It also includes his collection of photographs from research trips and other sources. Most of the papers are copies of his writings whether a lecture, a presentation, a column or a book. There are many transcripts of oral histories included in the collection, mostly from the Rim country and central Arizona. The collection also includes indexes of writings, oral histories, etc.

 Abstract:  Hoomothya (a.k.a. Mike Burns) was the only surviving Yavapai tribal member from the December 1872, Skeleton Cave Massacre, which took place in Arizona between the Yavapai Indians and the US Army. Hoomothya was orphaned as a result of the slaughter of his extended family at Skeleton Cave. Captured by the troops who killed this band of Yavapais, he was taken in as a temporary ward by Captain James Burns, who gave Hoomothya the anglicized name of Mike Burns. This collection contains background information on Mike Burns; the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and the Skeleton Cave in Arizona. The collection includes Burns’ correspondence with various individuals about his memoir, requests for assistance in its publication and several versions of the Burn’s manuscript.

Campbell was born and raised in Prescott, Arizona and throughout his lifetime worked as an Arizona postmaster, Yavapai County assessor, Arizona State tax commissioner, is a veteran of the Spanish American War and he was elected as the State of Arizona second Governor. This collection is a small personal/family oriented collection which consists of family materials, Campbell’s gubernatorial letters - mostly of a ceremonial nature - news clippings and photographs.

 Abstract:  Citizens of Prescott became aware of the value of historic properties along with the year-long (1964) celebration of the founding of Prescott in 1864. By the early 1970’s, an organized movement was initiated as Yavapai Heritage Foundation, seeking not only to recognize the Prescott assets, but also to offer consultation and guidance to other communities in the region of The Central Arizona Highlands.  Abstract:  The Kate T. Cory Papers and Photos contains transcripts, notes and photographs depicting Cory’s observations of the Hopi Indians, while she lived with the tribe from 1905 to 1912. The collection also includes personal papers and correspondence, as well as correspondence generated by Leroy Eslow in his attempt to have Cory’s works published. In addition, there is an assortment of research documents and photographs collected by Nancy Kirkpatrick Wright relating to Cory and her work as an ethnographer.

 Abstract:  This collection consists of black and white photographs of the Dial family as the proprietors of the Hotel Vendome in Prescott, Arizona. The images include photos of John, Edith and Frances Dial, the Hotel Vendome and guests; Smoki ceremonies, Yavapai County Courthouse and downtown Prescott, as well as other locations surrounding Prescott such as Granite Dell and the Grand Canyon National Park. The collection also includes news clippings and family documents.

 Abstract:  This collection provides a rich view of many people, places and events that took place mostly in the 1950’s and 1960’s in the larger Prescott area. Also included are area ranches and local scenery. Albums included are the Iron Spring’s summer homes and Del Rio Basin Pipeline. A significant portion of the collection is negatives.
