 Abstract:  James Addison Reavis, 1843-1914, was a swindler and forger, famous for attempting to fraudulently obtain 7,500 sq. miles of Arizona Territory by falsifying documents in Mexico and Spain to show a Spanish land grant to Don Miguel Peralta in 1748. This collection includes photoprints of selected defendant's documents, supposedly from various archvies in Guadalajara, Mexico, purporting to prove the existence of the Peralta land grant claim. Includes an item by item critical explanation relating to forged features of the documents. Documents are in Spanish; with English explanation.

Collection contains a letter (photocopy) to Mariana de Urrea, Commandante General de Sonora, from Romero in San Gabriel, Calif., recounting his experiences in attempting unsuccessfully to return to Sonora in the winter of 1823-1824 through the Palm Springs area, and describing the mail route between Tucson and San Gabriel which was conducted by Jose Cocomaricopa, the bearer of this letter, via the Colorado River route.

The hand-colored glass plate lantern slides were then shown to various school, club and church groups during travel lectures that Anna gave. Of special interest are photographs of various National Parks in both the United States and Canada, the Hopi Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona, Mexico and Mexico City, and “mountaineer” life in the Appalachians of Tennessee. Also included in this collection are handwritten travel notes. A glass plate projector and miscellaneous projection equipment in a black leather accordion briefcase are located in Special Collections.

 Abstract:  The Paul M. Roca Papers and Photographs contains materials which document Jesuit churches throughout the Northern Mexico states of Sonora and Chihuahua. The collection consists of two series, Photographs and Papers. The first series, Photographs (1887-1965, bulk 1955-1965) consists of 156 photographs featured in Paths of the Padres through Sonora: An Illustrated History & Guide to Its Spanish Churches published by the Arizona Pioneers’ Historical Society in 1967 with accompanying maps. The second series, Papers (1977), contains 4 manuscript versions of Spanish Jesuit Churches in Mexico’s Tarahumara published by the University of Arizona Press in 1979.  Abstract:  This collection contains materials documenting the Riggs pioneer family history from the time Brannick Riggs married Mary Elizabeth Robbins in Texas in 1856, their first wagon train move to Colorado in 1871, and several years later relocating again to southeastern Arizona, arriving and settling in Sulphur Springs Valley in 1879. Their eighth child, John Casey Riggs (1874-1943), was the family’s historian and creator of the bulk of the papers. The collection includes Our El Dorado, a biographical book written by John C. Riggs and his daughter, Jeanette Riggs Roll. Also included in the collection are biographical manuscripts; diaries and journals; business and personal correspondence; business records and ledgers; printed materials, including pamphlets, catalogs, newspapers and clippings; homestead land and mine patents; political papers of John Casey Riggs; maps; and photographs and negatives.

In addition to numerous journal and magazine articles about Western history, he published an acclaimed biography of Apache Scout Mickey Free in 2005 called Mickey Free: Apache captive, interpreter, and Indian Scout. Later in life he began writing about the early cinema, with a history of silent movies titled The Silent Mountie Movies-1910-1930 published posthumously in 2021. The Allan Radbourne collection consists of 7 series of records, notes, photographs, articles, transcriptions, presentations and other reference materials related to Southwestern Frontier and Borderlands History circa 1800's and early 1900's created by Allan Radbourne. Inclusive dates reflect the original date of the primary source material if available or if it is transcribed from an original source material. Born digital material found on a flash drive can be found in Series V.
