 Abstract:  Dorothea Cross Leighton (1908-1989) and Alexander H. Leighton (1908-2007), both physicians, were in training in psychiatry when they set out to collect information concerning life problems of Native Americans and Native means of dealing with such problems. They spent January to May, 1940 with a Navajo family south of Gallup, New Mexico. This collection contains: five handwritten field journals from the Navajo study; original manuscript materials with some carbon copies; a few Rorschach tests; carbon copies of life stories, related by eight individuals, which were extracted from the 1940 field journals; and approximately 200 black and white photographs, a few negatives, colored slides, and tapes of an English language program.

The collection consists primarily of correspondence related to this expedition, but also includes Cutter's personal journal from the 1938 trip, biographical information, and publications relating to the Expedition.

 Abstract:  The Wide Ruins Trading Post was located in the southeastern part of the Navajo Indian Reservation and was established in 1885 at the site of a large prehistoric settlement called Kin Teel, meaning "wide house". William "Bill" and Sallie Lippincott both operate the trading post during the years 1938 to 1949. The photographs featured in this collection are of the Wide Ruins Trading Post and those who lived on the reservation. These photographs have been given to Sallie Wagner by more than 10 different photographers who captured the life style and operations of the trading post.
