Pyne, who began his academic career at the University Iowa before becoming one of the founding faculty members of ASU-West, and later moved to ASU's Department of History and the School of Life Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on the Tempe campus. His groundbreaking research primarily focuses on global fire history, particularly in the US, Russia, Australia, Mexico, and Canada. It also contains correspondence and other papers related to his books, conferences, and grants, including the MacArthur Fellowship, the Fulbright Sweden, the National Humanities Center, Virginia G. Piper creative research fellowship, and the National Science Foundation. and research notes relating to the history of Grand Canyon, the Colorado Plateau, and
Lees Ferry. The collection is extensive and represents a significant contribution to the
study of human exploration and settlement of the southern Utah and northern Arizona
region. The majority of the collection dates from the late 1930s - 1990s. Items prior to
1930 tend to be copies or transcriptions of diaries and documents. Copies of Mormon
diaries and reminiscences, oral interviews, river logs, correspondence with other
researchers and friends, and photographs constitute the bulk of this
