Skeleton Cave Massacre, which took place in Arizona between the Yavapai Indians and the US Army. Hoomothya was orphaned as a
result of the slaughter of his extended family at Skeleton Cave. Captured by the troops who killed this band of Yavapais, he
was taken in as a temporary ward by Captain James Burns, who gave Hoomothya the anglicized name of Mike Burns. This collection
contains background information on Mike Burns; the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and the Skeleton Cave in
Arizona. The collection includes Burns’ correspondence with various individuals about his memoir, requests for assistance in

University of Arizona College of Medicine and was the first department head hired to
the College of Medicine. On May 1, 1967 he became Professor and Head of the
Department of Pathology and served in those capacities for 20 years. He was also
Director of Clinical Pathology for the university’s hospital and from July 1, 1971
until early 1973 served as Acting Dean of the College of Medicine and Acting
Director of the UA’s Arizona Medical Center while the founding dean, Merlin K.
DuVal, served as Assistant Secretary of Health in the U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare. This collection consists primarily of documents relating to
the early history of the UA College of Medicine including its Department of
Pathology, Layton’s Acting Deanship, and the Medical Service Plan and other clinical
faculty matters. It also includes information about Layton’s career before he came
to the UA, information about his professional society contributions, honors and
awards he received, various presentations he made and it also includes some

but also a few travel stereographs, cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, and daguerreotypes,
mostly relating to the Overson family of St. Johns, Arizona, along with some of townspeople,
buildings, and special occasions. There are a few portraits of people taken by Charles Jarvis,
circa 1890 to 1910. More were taken by his daughter, Margaret Jarvis Overson, circa 1920 to 1960.
A small amount were taken by other photographers and by her adult children, especially Eva M. Overson Tanner.
The images include mostly unidentified people, family, student class groups, school athletic teams,
and a few celebrations and street scenes. Photographs also include Mormon schools, school groups,
