(1908-2007), both physicians, were in training in psychiatry when they set out to
collect information concerning life problems of Native Americans and Native means of
dealing with such problems. They spent January to May, 1940 with a Navajo family south
of Gallup, New Mexico. This collection contains: five handwritten field journals from
the Navajo study; original manuscript materials with some carbon copies; a few Rorschach
tests; carbon copies of life stories, related by eight individuals, which were extracted
from the 1940 field journals; and approximately 200 black and white photographs, a few

Whiting-Personal. The bulk of the collection was amassed by the late A.F. Whiting over
