The collection features insurance documents that serve as legal evidence of financial transactions among members and within lodges. The materials include membership files containing legal and insurance records, lodge correspondence, administrative files like meeting minutes and financial papers, and printed materials. The materials are mostly written in Spanish. The Alianza was known to advocate for Mexican-American education and civil rights. His collection includes his personal materials, professional files, research files, writings, audiovisual materials, and memorabilia he collected throughout his life. August taught at several different institutions and held various positions at colleges, universities, and other history-focused institutions. He served as an expert witness on key pieces of water rights legislation in the state of Arizona. He researched several prominent Arizonan politicians including Barry Goldwater, Dennis DeConcini, and Evan Mecham. He also did several research projects surrounding Wade Church, Jim Chilton, the New Mexico Bar Association, and John R. Norton III, amongst others. A large portion of his research files are dedicated to water politics of Arizona including, but not limited to ANSAC, the CAP, the Colorado River Controversy, Native American/indigenous water rights, the Santa Cruz River, the Salt River, the Gila River, and others.

 Abstract:  Field notebooks, reprint articles, speeches, survey abstracts, photographs, diaries, and correspondence pertaining to Shantz's interests in worldwide agriculture and botany. Shantz's various trips to Africa resulted in extensive field notes, including those for the Smithsonian African Expedition, 1919 to 1920, and the African Education Commission, 1923 to 1924. Background material he collected about Africa encompasses maps; postcards; dictionaries and primers on languages, including Swahili; also, articles on the people, the areas they inhabited, and specific problems, such as the tsetse fly, sleeping sickness, forced labor, and race relations. Photographs of his travels from the Cape to Cairo depict the Nile, Egyptian ruins, wild and domestic animals, vegetation and the landscape, villages and cities, and people in tribal dress. Communal activities documented include cultivation, thatching roofs, building a road, and weaving a large bamboo mat to cover a bridge walkway.
